    I'm a guide at a county history museum. 

    After welcoming the visitor, I ask where they're from. 

    I find it a great way to see how much they want to chat, which informs me how much to talk and how much to listen.  Also, if they're from my county, it's normally not a good idea to tell them they're own history, so I ask them for history and use what they tell me to add to the information we have at the Museum.

    Dear Cindy

    I agree and I would want to know what brought them to the museum and tell them something about the museum. I think that helps make a lasting connection.
