    Hi everyone!

Wanted to post about this to pick the brains of all our wonderful museum colleagues and friends.

My institution recently joined the Museums for All initiative as a participating institution last November and we have discovered our visitors have been utilizing the program. Most museums and institutions are also participating in Museums for All by offering reduced and/or free admission, but we have been weighing the value of possibly having a Museums for All membership or some sort of special card to offer participants. Our thinking is that we can give WIC/SNAP users some sort of special membership card in order to avoid having to pull out their WIC.SNAP card every time they visit the museum. However, this may not be an issue as about 100 visitors have already utilized the Museums for All program without any issues. We are hesitant that creating a  separate membership program will create more work for staff without the necessary staff resources to handle a different type of membership outside of the 9 different levels we already offer with full museum benefits.

Does anyone have any special memberships associated with the Museums for All program or any insights on the logistics of the program?

    Many thanks!

    Hi Daniel,

At Holden Forests & Gardens, we've been offering an Access Membership for about a year and a half now (Become a Member " Holden Forests & Gardens).  It's essentially a membership version of a Museums for All ticket - it equates to our four-person membership for about a quarter of the original price.  The process of developing it was definitely an undertaking, though our membership director was able to benefit from the experience of a colleague from an organization that already had a similar membership program.  The membership purchase process is a little different since folks do need to show their benefit card, so it can only be purchased in person at one of our two campuses.  It's a helpful option for folks who come in often via the MFA program and, from what I understand, member numbers for that level have been high enough to make any additional effort worth it.  Happy to chat more offline (I'm involved from the guest experience/front lines side) and/or connect you with our membership director, feel free to reach out!

    Cheers,
    Beth

    Hi Daniel,

We recently launched a discounted Family membership as part of our Museums for All efforts. Rather than create another level requiring additional overhead and yet another level, we chose to use a discount code instead. I'm happy to discuss how we implemented and the reasons why we chose not to create a new level. Launched in November, this has been a very successful effort in support of our access programs.

    Hi Daniel,

After hearing of a similar program through Megan Geiken at the Grand Rapids Children's Museum, I agreed that this program would be a great benefit to our community members, since many live below the poverty level and are currently only able to visit our museum thanks to the discounted admission rates we offer through the Museums For All program.
While this Family Membership level would not be a part of the Museums For All initiative, it is similarly aimed to "encourage individuals of all backgrounds to visit museums regularly and build lifelong museum habits," at a 75% discount from the regular price. By creating this Membership level at IMAS the following benefits would be realized:
    • MFA Members would only have to show their EBT/WIC card once, upon registration/renewal for their annual membership, instead of every time they visit us
    • MFA Members would receive Member discounts on our workshops, educational programs, and camps which do not currently have discounts for low-income families
    • MFA Members would have access to the hundreds of other museums that are part of the ASTC Travel Passport program to expand their museum experiences
We decided to make this its own membership level instead of creating a discount code purely for reporting purposes. (It's easier for us to pull reports and see member activity by level). However, we stress that this level is identical in benefits to the regularly-priced Family Membership level. We also have this level available to sell online with the note to either email a photo of their card or bring their benefits card upon their first visit so we may verify eligibility. This has worked well for us.
After a successful and well-received launch of this new membership level, I have gone a step further to include an automatic give-back feature to our highest level of membership. At our museum, we offer a membership that previously included the highest level of perks, plus a gift certificate for a regular Family Membership for that member to give away. We found that the members who purchased at this highest level were less interested in gifting a membership to a specific family, with many of them responding that all their friends already were members, or they would gift the certificate only for it to never be redeemed.
After community requests for a 'scholarship' of sorts for memberships, I decided to establish the Pay It Forward Membership Fund at IMAS. Our highest-level members now have the option to receive that one certificate  -OR- the museum would use that value to gift three memberships to families in need. Of course, overwhelmingly, the response has been to give three away.
Since this fund launched, just a week ago, we already have the funds to give away 18 fully funded Membership For All Family memberships! We will begin awarding these to first-time members who also qualify for Museums For All. After this first free year, they are still eligible for a discounted MFA membership.
I hope this helps, but if you have any additional questions feel free to reach out! Best of luck!

The Peoria PlayHouse Children's Museum has exactly this type of membership, called the Explorer Membership - you can learn more about it here: https://peoriaplayhouse.org/membership/ph-explorer-program/

This membership has been in existence since the museum opened nearly 8 years ago.

    HI Daniel
The Science Museum of Virginia instituted a Museums for All Membership in 2018. It's our most popular membership category.  It's $25 per family for two adults and all children under 18 for one year.

I'd be happy to chat more about it!

Daniel,  you are getting a lot of great advice and input here and it is wonderful to see so many institutions responding to this need to include all people and situations!

Here are two tidbits of info that a couple of our clients are using/trying:

One zoo is planning to use ID ME, which is a government-based program to identify people receiving some kind of government assistance or military background I believe.  This will allow for online, seamless purchases without having to show or verify with a SNAP ID or anything else when visiting. As I understand it will be built into the online transaction process once completed.

A Science Center client is working with the local chapter of the National Urban League who will refer low income families that they have already identified as deserving of the free or low cost memberships the Science Center will be offering - a win-win for all!

Good luck to you and everyone on this worthwhile initiative!
