Planet Word: Where Language Comes to Life
Planet Word is the country's only museum of words and language. Its creation was inspired by the need to find a new way to engage people, especially adolescents, with books and reading, out of the belief that a strong democracy required a literate populace. I believed a participatory, high-tech, voice-activated museum would grab visitors' attention and show them how words mattered, in fun, inclusive, unexpected ways. As words themselves started to become the news – not just how we recorded the news – exhibits were added on topics such as misinformation, propaganda, and words that wound. Topical programming also keeps PW relevant.
Ann B. Friedman is the Founder and CEO of Planet Word and the developer behind the restoration of the Franklin School, the museum's home. She taught elementary school in Montgomery County, MD, for 12 years until her retirement in 2011. She is a board member and former chair of the SEED Foundation, which operates public, inner-city, college-prep boarding schools. She is a director of the American Alliance of Museums, the Aspen Music Festival and School, and the Downtown D.C. Foundation. She has master's degrees from American University and the LSE and a BA from Stanford University. She is married to NYTimes columnist Thomas L. Friedman.
