  • 1.  Capturing visitor demographics

Am interested in how museums are capturing visitor demographics?  We are a free admission museum and currently collect only a zip code and time of entry.   Also, any suggestions on qualitative information capture relating to visitor reactions to exhibitions and/or presentations.

At the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, we have started using Placer ai. It has been particularly helpful for providing visitor demographics and a more clear image of total impact, as we occasionally have freely accessible outdoor installations that prove more difficult for tracking foot traffic. We also use HoxtonAi at our entrance and in galleries. That provides interesting information about the average length of time visitors spend in the museum, and more specifically, in individual exhibitions and galleries.

    Hello Fred,

NUBART developed an innovative audio tour system (no app) that helps museums collect relevant visitor data and, includes a feedback form.

I invite you to read here how Nubart helps museums collect data without being invasive.
I invite you to read here  how Nubart helps museums track the positions and movements of audio tour users in your facility.

I would gladly send further information and samples.

    Best,

We had the same question a few years back, and then we learned about the Collaboration for Ongoing Visitor Experience Studies (COVES), which was piloted by Museum of Science, Boston and several other large museums with an IMLS grant. Today, there are 50+ organizations nationwide who are part of COVES. The surveys used by COVES include a variety of demographic questions as well as a range of questions about the visitor experience. I believe there is a sliding fee scale. You can reach out to them at coves@mos.org.  Hope this helps!
