  • 1.  Traveling Exhibition Partnership

    Hello,

We have a traveling exhibition focused on those who helped Japanese Americans during and after World War II. The traveling component provides a 360-degree perspective of the Japanese American WWII experience while exploring its relevance today. Then we work with a community organization or museum in each location to tell the local story at each site including stories of those who helped Japanese Americans during or after World War II.

We've been lucky to have this project grant funded for two years with each site receiving a stipend and the grant covering a majority of the expenses. Many venues applied additional funding, but for many the grant covered all costs.

Going forward, we're going to have to charge to cover the costs associated with the exhibition. Does anyone know any examples of traveling exhibitions which charge and still operate as more of a partnership than a rental? If anyone has a traveling exhibition which functions as a partnership, I'd love to hear about it.

    Thank you for your time!

    Best,

    Megan

    Megan,
If you have not already, you should look at the Museum on Main Street Program of the Smithsonian Institution's Traveling Exhibition Service. Good Luck! e

The Minnesota History Center rented the SITES traveling exhibit "Beyond Bollywood: Indian Americans Shape the Nation" and used it as the foundation for developing a larger exhibit about our local Indian American community. We worked with a local community advisory group for about a year and integrated the Smithsonian panels into our story.

I know several other museums have done similar projects with that exhibit. Ours was one of the earliest and substantial projects, I'm sure SITES could tell you more.

Our budget was around $65,000 plus staff salaries for a 2400 SF exhibit. The project has yielded lasting benefits including members and donors, ongoing documentation about the Indian American community in Minnesota, and organizations that hold rental events at the History Center.
