I have recently started working at a museum that has a car/vehicle collection, and as Registrar, I have been tasked with completing tax forms for the 2024 vehicle donations. My background is almost exclusively in art museums, so I am unfamiliar with tax form 1098-c. The IRS website is not the most user-friendly and thought I would put my questions to other museum professionals instead.
I would be very interested in connecting with anyone who has experience filing 1098-c vehicle donation tax forms, as I have several questions. Such as: am I required to populate the donor's social security number? What boxes am I allowed to leave blank if the museum intends to accession the vehicle into the permanent collection rather than sell it? Can I put "N/A" in box 2a (odometer mileage) for historic vehicles that don't have an odometer?
