 Storage for Glass Bottles

Hi all!

I am a new Registrar and am still learning the tricks of the trade, so I am hoping to get a little advice on a storage problem we're having. We recently recieved a donation of about 30 glass bottles (all empty) and my mind immediately went to box dividers so they're not clanking against each other. The problem is the dividers we have on hand from Gaylord are quite short and the bottles are about the height of a standard glass soda bottle. Anyone know if there are taller dividers available or if there is another storage option?? Thank you!!

Hi Mackenzie,

This is a problem I have tackled because my museum is located in an old soda factory. We have lots of glass bottles! The best economical solution I came up with that has worked for the majority of our bottles is to use trays inside of a standard record carton and tissue paper to provide padding between each bottle. Depending on the size of the bottles, I can fit 5-6 bottles per tray this way. The bottles are stored on their sides this way, not standing up, but I do not have the space to store them upright. I use enough tissue in between that they do not move at all, so this has worked out well for us.

Hope this helps, and maybe others will have ideas too!

Mackenzie:

I really like the idea of the dividers making the objects so accessible.  If the dividers you've got are too short, could you make a template to size them up to the right size?  Alternatively, I'd look to the dividers found in boxes of wine & liquor - if you can find ones that fit your object, use them as a pattern/template to make ones for your collection.
