Hi all,
Can anyone tell me what the object in the attached photographs might be? It's about 1 foot tall and was found in association with shuttles and bobbins in a chest next to a hanging batten linen loom, on the other side of the chest is a linen spinning wheel. I thought it might be some sort of warping board or winder, but I can't find anything similar with my Google-fu. Context is mid-1800s German immigrant community in the the mid-west.
As a fiber artist, this to me is very clearly a small loom.
My first thought is that it is a loom for hand-weaving socks.
I've forwarded your question to some fiber arts/spinning/weaving experts I know, including Florence Feldman-Wood of The Spinning Wheel Sleuth (referred to me by Deb Robson) -- I'll let you know if any of them know (including whether or not they confirm "small loom" or similar).
