 Crates for traveling exhibition

Hello,

I recently came across some crates that use a closure method I've not seen before (see photo). I'm concerned about how well they may hold up over the course of a multi-year tour. If anyone on the forum happens to have experience with crates using this kind of closure I'd really appreciate any feedback you could offer.

Thanks!

Michelle

My got-to hardware for the security of wooden crates for any travelling exhibition is the butterfly twist latch. The latch in your image doesn't strike me as robust enough to take the rigors of repeated handling.

I agree that these latches are not ideal. I've had to deal with them in a couple of exhibits. There are a couple of issues with them. First, they don't fold flat so they are susceptible to being bent when loading and unloading into trucks. Second, the alignment of the crate door needs to be spot on in order for the clasp to close. There's not much wiggle room here and overzealous help may end up bending the latch to force it to close. In any case the butterfly latch is a much easier to use, more robust, and holds the door closed more tightly.

I'm in agreement that these are not ideal - for all of the reasons already shared, and for lack of security. I would never travel artifacts in a crate like this.
