 Accessioning an Album

Hello,

I am working on accessioning an small album that contains newspaper clippings. The clippings are glued to the pages of the album. Most of the pages are no longer attached in the album, and it is also filled with loose newspaper clippings that were never attached to a page. For anyone who has worked with an item like this, should the loose newspaper clippings be treated as separate items, or share the same accession number with the album and the loose pages?

Thank you.

Hi Clayton,

At my institution, the clippings would share the same accession number as the album since, while not adhered, they did arrive as part of the album. We do assign sub-numbers, as Vivian suggests, when warranted. For example, we routinely do this for photo albums in the Photography Collection and sketchbooks in the Art Collection.

Best wishes,

Hi, Clayton - I believe the album should be treated as a single object, possibly with sub-numbering to indicate loose "parts."  You may also (forgove me if you know this) want to look for already-digitized issues of the newspapers to make the cataloguing (and later access by researchers or the public) easier.  Vivian

Hi Clayton,

We have many of these types of objects in our collection. We catalog the object and pages as part of the same accession, but as stated by others given a subset of numbers or letters depending on how or if you were ever to display the object (s).
