 403b Contribution/Match

I have a few questions regarding current museum practices around 403b plans.

  • Does your museum match employee contributions? If so, up to how much?
  • Does your museum contribute to the employee account even if the employee does not?

Thank you in advance for your responses.

My board and I agreed to a 2.5% match plan. I asked them to build this into my salary agreement for FUTURE persons in this position - any reasonable ED would expect this in their package.

Our board matches up to 3% of any employee contribution. The employee must contribute - if they contribute less than 3%, their match is less. If they contribute more, the match is still 3%. Anyone making more than $5K a year must be offered our plan. For some context, our operating budget is under 500K - we have 4 FT and 1 PT staff, plus a few seasonal PT staff.

Our museum matches 3% for those staff that participate in the retirement plan.

Our foundation matches up to 5%. Full-time employees, over 30 a week are eligible. Employees must contribute in order to get the match.

Hi Jessica,

While I'm retired from the museum field, we offered a 50% match on up to a 6% employee contribution. The employee must contribute to get the match.

When I was at the museum, there was a group of HR professionals in AAM. We regularly polled on this. Also, in November, the national Total Compensation Not for Profit Survey opens. If you participate, you get the survey for free. It's a great resource!

I  hope this helps!

It won't allow me to respond to others:

Under the new regulations, a company connot limit participation in a 403(b) plan based on full-time status or hours per week. All employees who work 500 or more hours in two consecutive 12-month periods must be permitted to make elective deferrals to the plan.

My current place of employment (non-profit, but connected to museums) does not require a match and contributes 10% of each employee's salary. My last job, which was a museum, provided 13%, no match required.

My current museum employer at one time matched up to 4% of an employee's participation. This opportunity was rescinded during the 2008 financial challenge and has never been restored. Employee contributions remain.
