  • 1.  Youth Protection training/certification for staff & volunteers?

    Posted 05-21-2025 04:30 PM

    Hello fellow museum colleagues,

Our organization would like to implement a youth protection training and/or certification for our staff and volunteers, as we develop more youth educational programming and also accept minors into a special volunteering program. Do any of you have any recommendations for a youth protection training, especially for museum-specific policies?

Many of our staff have already completed such trainings from either the Boy Scouts and/or the Experimental Aviation Association; the Boy Scouts training is available free of charge to anyone, and since we are a small organization with limited funding, we talked about just using that. I was curious what other options might be suggested, however, and if anyone has any other information or resources on this topic.

    Thank you for your recommendations!

    Hi Ami

I've taken training offered by this group: https://www.praesidiuminc.com/prevention-tools/

Their website also offers some helpful tools and strategies.

The BSA Youth Protection training is excellent and should be enough if you don't have your own museum-specific training class. You might also contact your local Master Gardeners chapter – here in Virginia we're required to take a Youth Protection training which is available through the Cooperative Extension, so there may be such a training available to you as well.

    Hello Jay,

Thank you for your input. As a small organization, I think the BSA training might be our best option, but I will check out the Masters Gardener's resources as well, thank you!

    Hello Melanie,

This is exactly the kind of larger resource I was hoping to find, so thank you for suggesting it. Though we may not use it a this time, I have saved it for future reference as our organization grows. Thank you so much!
