  • 1.  Website Redesign

    Posted 05-08-2023 03:21 PM

I saw some older posts about this topic but didn't see any public responses.

We are investigating a redesign of our website (currently Squarespace) and concurrently we are planning for ADA compliance. We went through a process about 5 years ago and we had a local web person set up the template on Squarespace but now years later we want a re-boot but we want to make sure that we are ADA compliant (we weren't and a lawsuit ensued).

We're a medium sized historic house museum and gardens.

Any guidance from anyone else in the community, would be greatly appreciated (process, expenses, etc.).

    Hi Paul,

We're thinking about this as well-basically, the question for us is whether we want to start building a custom, from-scratch dream site, and keep our current (not compliant) website in the meantime, or do we make a Squarespace (or something similar) now to hold us over while we plan and budget for that bigger project. Looking forward to everyone's input!

Hi Paul, I am looking into this process as well as our website has not been updated since its original setup in 2008 (!) - it's really just a blog and not very functional. I haven't done a formal RFP, but I've been in touch with firms that I found via Google search and word of mouth, and most of them are happy to meet and provide a proposal. My dream site isn't in the budget right now, so my thinking is to try to find a firm or designer that can provide a scalable, flexible solution, i.e. create something that would serve our needs now and that could be expanded/upgraded into the dream site down the line without requiring a complete overhaul -  a design in which all the "bells and whistles", so to speak, could be added on later without having to start from scratch.
Some general guidance would be to determine exactly what you're looking for in the new site and its priorities - obviously the ADA compliance is a priority, but what else? Online collection, virtual exhibitions, etc.? You may want to give the designer a list of 3-5 websites or pages that you like and why - giving them examples is helpful for them to see your vision. With the budget, make sure it includes basic admin costs outside of the design like hosting, domain name registration, maintenance, etc. One proposal I received recommended setting aside another 10-15% of the total budget for additional features or components that you didn't anticipate previously.
Finally, as a good starting point, I'd recommend reaching out to Cuberis. They focus almost exclusively on museum websites and work primarily with Wordpress: https://cuberis.com/. They also have some budgeting tips at their site.
Hope this was helpful! Please feel free to email me if you'd like to hear more about my website redesign adventures so far. :)

Accessibility is complicated, and it's much more than "ADA Compliance." All designers will tell you they understand compliance, but it's not as simple as following a couple of rules. It's a spectrum from zero to extremely compliant, and it involves every aspect of design from color choice to machine readability. It will involve compromises between the experience of your "average" viewer and accessibility for individuals with particular needs. Do not rely solely on your designer. Engage in the process. Ask questions and bring in outside consultants to review. I highly recommend reaching out to your own employees and member community to create a focus group with a variety of viewpoints and needs.

Also, Wordpress, Wordpress, Wordpress. It is the standard. If you must use an intermediate service, make sure it is sitting on top of Wordpress.

Hi Paul (and everyone else on the thread),

We do website design and development and work with many museums including The Broad, LACMA, Japanese American National Museum, National WWI Museum and Memorial, and several others.

We'd be happy to chat and provide guidance on the process and a range for the budget. The budget is highly dependent on
    1. What features and integrations are there?
    2. What level of ADA compliance do you need? 2.2 A, AA, AAA? (Note 2.2 is now the latest standard)
    3. Are there others items you need such as branding, content, etc.
And there are many other factors that can push the budget in various directions.

We have a simple RFP template you can download and use on our website: https://www.urbaninsight.com/model-website-rfp-template#white_paper_form

Feel free to reach out to me at skelly@urbaninsight.com and we can help guide you on what factors to consider when preparing your RFP.

    Thanks,
    Josh
