Good Morning Everyone - First time post as my colleague made me aware of this chat.
I have had the pleasure of activating projects like these in both the Museum AND Non-Museum space (Experiential Sporting Events, Lifestyle Events, Safety & Security, Concerts, Auto Shows, etc.). To say the least, there are ALOT of options, different confidence intervals, steep pricing and a level of business intelligence that is still needed to truly get the accuracy you are looking for (such as entry and exit doors, employees, volunteers, overall comparison to attendance, venue layout). It also depends on what decisions you are trying to make and how fast you are making those decisions (Push notifications via mobile app OR Museum re-design OR Programming & Event Planning OR Tours and Experiences OR Engagement/Impact Reporting?).
Couple Notes:
- All of this software gets thrown off my apple watches, children devices, tablets, phones, airpods and any other new device.
- For software that uses WIFI, there is an underlying formula that calculates the % of people that typically do not join wifi networks x % of people that do not know they leave their wifi connection settings on, etc... Though not the most accurate solution, it can support measurement plans at Auto Shows, Outdoor Events, etc..
- If you have a mobile app, this is considered in the formula as well (most software companies say it is proprietary)
- For software that uses beacons and nodes, they are leveraging several signals that ping of our phones normally, like internal hash keys, MAC ADDRESSES and ip addresses. Phone providers are updating phone software regularly to prevent this level of tracking / data capture. I have leveraged this type of technology ALOT prior to my time in NFP/Cultural Institutions, so I am happy to share my experience. Again, a level of business intelligence is needed to truly maximize what we are all looking for.
- If you have a mobile app WITH A HIGHER ADOPTION RATE, this will make the data more accurate and actionable
- If you want something out of the box, then I would lean towards a software that does WIFI, BLUETOOTH and other signals, but we have been quoted large $$ proposals and again, the increase of technology creates a lot of false signals/visitors.
With that said, I believe there is an option that maybe we should all consider collectively (and/or in collaboration). We are now investigating the realm of Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) and Indoor Positioning, which should create a more sustainable measurement plan for short term and long term strategy.

Aislelabs: Aislelabs offers a visitor analytics platform that includes heat maps of visitor traffic and engagement. Their platform uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology to track visitor movement.
Infsoft: Infsoft provides indoor positioning and tracking solutions that include heat maps of visitor traffic and behavior. Their platform uses a combination of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and beacon technology to track visitors.
Euclid Analytics: Euclid Analytics offers a platform for indoor location analytics that includes visitor tracking, heat maps, and behavioral insights. Their platform uses Wi-Fi technology to track visitor movement.
- Placer.ai is a location analytics platform that tracks foot traffic patterns in physical locations, such as retail stores and malls. The platform uses anonymous mobile phone location data to provide real-time and historical insights into visitor behavior, including visit frequency, dwell time, and demographic information.
