Visitor Location Heat Maps Software

    Greetings All,

Anyone have any recommendations for tracking where visitors are from with interactive heat maps?  What I am looking for is replacing the antiquated push pin on a map that visitors place with a touch screen where when they input their zip code it gets tallied so that zip codes with high attendees are red, ones with few blue, etc.  Finding lots of expensive subscriptions services, but I just want something I can put on an external drive and hook up to a touch screen monitor.

I've had the same exact question... and did not find anything through my research. I'm hopeful this provides some insights!

    Thanks!

I feel I need to clarify as the responses and sales pitches are way of the mark.

I'm not interested in knowing where visitors are in the museum.  I'm interested in tracking where they come from.  I want visitors to be able to use a touch screen to enter their zip code (or country as someone pointed out not to exclude international visitors-that was going to be my next item) and a map changes color to reflect which zip codes are the "hottest" for visitorship.

OOOoohhh got it. Yeah, that's fun to know. Are you interested in having it displayed for visitors or just for internal knowledge sake? If the latter, then can your front-line staff take that info when taking their entry fee? That's a pretty standard procedure that visitors are used to in the world.
If you looking to do something more exciting for visitors to appreciate, well, the skies the limit. There are many digital AND analog ways to do that. Just let us know which way you're like to go with it.

So I am interested in having it on display for visitors.  We do it old-school now with a map on a corkboard and pins and people love it.  They look to see how many pins are in from their state or look to see from what countries people have been from. We try to gather that info when people enter, but we are free so not always easy for the docents to stop people and ask for that.

So what I am looking for perfect-world style: A visitor goes to the touch screen (we have it at the end of the exhibits) and can select United States or World.  If United States they can enter their zip code.  Once entered it shows a heat map (or density map) by zip code for people to see.  If they select World, then they would enter in their country name and they would see a similar result by country.

It's not a recommendation, but I have seen presentations for using Placer.ai to make visitor heat maps with cell phone location data. As I understand it, they're mostly in the retail space and have been pitching museums to expand their market. https://www.placer.ai/

A sales rep from Placer.ai has been relentless in contacting me, and I am in need of more detailed visitor information so I am going to see a demo next week. They make visitor heat maps but also make assumptions about demographics based on where visitors go after they leave your space. I asked the sales rep to provide me with a list of other cultural institutions that use placer but that hasn't happened yet. I can report back to this thread.

Thanks Kathryn, I'd love to learn more. I do feel a bit bad for Harry since this is kind of hijacking the original intent of his inquiry. harry, would you prefer we start a new thread for heat mapping?

I think if y'all are interested in tracking where people are in your museum, it might make sense to start a new thread.

    Kathryn:

I have been tracking what are generally known as "Location Intelligence" software solutions for the past several years. I do experience strategy & design consulting for museums, visitor attractions and retail, and I have been exploring how to use these tools to inspire creative solutions. I have trialed both Placer.ai and Near.com. Both are similar in that they aggregate data from hundreds of mobile apps, and then anonymize it for use in analyzing movement to specific sites. Both provide the opportunity to geo fence any location, and then provide data visualizations that illustrate patterns of movement to the site. They also integrate with other sources of data that provide more data that characterize those visitors based on demographics and their "geosocial" behaviors. These tools are quite powerful in that you can better understand who is in your neighborhood and what their behaviors are, based on their social media patterns. For the most part these companies focus on site selection for retqil real estate. I have asked them whether they have been pursuing museums, and in general I don't think they have focused on this market. But I do think there is great potential for how these tools might be used in better understanding your markets and communities.

I have considered taking on software licenses for my practice, but costs start at about $15,000. annually and go up from there based on the number of reports generated. Note that this moves into the sensitive area of data privacy, and even if the data is aggregated, some perceive this as stepping over a line. These companies are struggling to break into the European market due to GDPR, as ongoing court cases are setting new standards by the week.

Bu this is a space to watch, as these tools I expect will become part of every marketers kit in the near future.

Hi Harry and fellow AAMers, I've been poking around this as a pet project for years. I've never applied any of these solutions, but I have a short list you can explore. PLEASE can you report back with your final solution with its pros and cons? Pretty please?

    1. Rentlytics: Rentlytics offers heat maps that allow museum staff to see visitor traffic patterns, dwell times, and popular exhibit areas.

    2. Crowd Connected: Crowd Connected offers a real-time location system that tracks visitor movement in museums and galleries. Their heat maps can be customized to show visitor density, flow, and behavior.

    3. PaveAI: PaveAI uses artificial intelligence and computer vision to analyze visitor movement and generate heat maps that show the most visited areas of a museum.

    4. Aislelabs: Aislelabs offers a visitor analytics platform that includes heat maps of visitor traffic and engagement. Their platform uses Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology to track visitor movement.

    5. Infsoft: Infsoft provides indoor positioning and tracking solutions that include heat maps of visitor traffic and behavior. Their platform uses a combination of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and beacon technology to track visitors.

    6. Euclid Analytics: Euclid Analytics offers a platform for indoor location analytics that includes visitor tracking, heat maps, and behavioral insights. Their platform uses Wi-Fi technology to track visitor movement.

    7. Placer.ai is a location analytics platform that tracks foot traffic patterns in physical locations, such as retail stores and malls. The platform uses anonymous mobile phone location data to provide real-time and historical insights into visitor behavior, including visit frequency, dwell time, and demographic information.

    GOOD LUCK!

    Matt

Good Morning Everyone - First time post as my colleague made me aware of this chat.

I have had the pleasure of activating projects like these in both the Museum AND Non-Museum space (Experiential Sporting Events, Lifestyle Events, Safety & Security, Concerts, Auto Shows, etc.).  To say the least, there are ALOT of options, different confidence intervals, steep pricing and a level of business intelligence that is still needed to truly get the accuracy you are looking for (such as entry and exit doors, employees, volunteers, overall comparison to attendance, venue layout).  It also depends on what decisions you are trying to make and how fast you are making those decisions (Push notifications via mobile app OR Museum re-design OR Programming & Event Planning OR Tours and Experiences OR Engagement/Impact Reporting?).

    Couple Notes:

    • All of this software gets thrown off my apple watches, children devices, tablets, phones, airpods and any other new device.
    • For software that uses WIFI, there is an underlying formula that calculates the % of people that typically do not join wifi networks x % of people that do not know they leave their wifi connection settings on, etc...  Though not the most accurate solution, it can support measurement plans at Auto Shows, Outdoor Events, etc..
      • If you have a mobile app, this is considered in the formula as well (most software companies say it is proprietary)
    • For software that uses beacons and nodes, they are leveraging several signals that ping of our phones normally, like internal hash keys, MAC ADDRESSES and ip addresses.  Phone providers are updating phone software regularly to prevent this level of tracking / data capture.  I have leveraged this type of technology ALOT prior to my time in NFP/Cultural Institutions, so I am happy to share my experience.  Again, a level of business intelligence is needed to truly maximize what we are all looking for.
      • If you have a mobile app WITH A HIGHER ADOPTION RATE, this will make the data more accurate and actionable
    • If you want something out of the box, then I would lean towards a software that does WIFI, BLUETOOTH and other signals, but we have been quoted large $$ proposals and again, the increase of technology creates a lot of false signals/visitors.

With that said, I believe there is an option that maybe we should all consider collectively (and/or in collaboration).  We are now investigating the realm of Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) and Indoor Positioning, which should create a more sustainable measurement plan for short term and long term strategy.

Happy to set up time to meet and discuss what we have been thinking. :)
