Colleagues,
The Memorial Art Gallery at the University of Rochester is in the process of exploring critical and timely questions related to the problematic gallery space that displays the arts of Africa, Oceania, and Americas. We plan to convene an advisory council later this year to support this effort.
We are interested in hearing from others who have worked with advisory councils in a similar manner, as we can learn from your successes and failures. We would particularly welcome your feedback around such questions as:
- What was the makeup of the participants on your advisory council (i.e., educators, museum professionals, community members, administrators)?
- What was expected of participants?
- What community groups or organizations were most useful to engage?
- How many participants are ideal for an effective advisory council? Did you pay the participants?
- How did you structure the meetings of the council? How often did the group meet, and for how long?
Feel free to respond to these questions or with other thoughts on this topic through this thread or you may contact me directly at kzkorsh@gmail.com.
Many thanks.
