My museum was fortunate to receive funding to hire a position that will support (along with a digital archivist) the implementation of a digital asset management system that will incorporate digital institutional archives and collection material. Our digital collections are comprised of digital photographs, scanned ephemera, oral histories, audio, and moving images. The role will assist with establishing a metadata scheme for documenting and tracking digital collection objects, organizing and cataloging digital objects, preparing materials for ingest into the DAMS, and carrying out digital preservation functions. I'm wondering how this type of role, which is part cataloging, part collections management/registration, and part digital preservation is shaping up at other history museums? I know art museums often now have time-based media conservators, but I'm wondering how history museums are organizing positions around this type of work. I've seen a few job postings for Digital Cataloger and Digital Collections Specialist with a range of responsibilities. Does anyone have a title they like or a job description for this type of role they would be able to share? I really appreciate your feedback!
