    Dear colleagues,

As a former museum preparator and current theatre maker, I am struck by how closely aligned our work often is, especially regarding the creation of an environment to host members of the public. In an effort to learn more about the people behind the diverse fields of live events, I’ve partnered with The United States Institute for Theatre Technology and SMU DataArts to conduct a national survey.

The 2022 Live Arts, Culture and Entertainment (LACE) Survey of Workforce Demographics is available starting today. This survey will teach us about people working in these related fields and provide a baseline to measure progress over time. Broad participation is crucial to ensure the success of this project and it should take no more than five minutes to complete.

    Begin the survey now

You will be asked questions about your heritage (such as race, ethnicity, and nation of origin), age, gender identity, disability status, sexual orientation, and workplace perception. For every survey question, you have the option to decline to state an answer. Individuals who work, volunteer or freelance are all responding. This study does not collect any personally identifying information and all data is maintained securely and anonymously by SMU DataArts, the National Center for Arts Research at Southern Methodist University.

The survey will close on Friday, November 4, and you only need to respond to the survey one time.

If you have any questions about this survey and how the data is being used, please visit the FAQs on the site, or reach out to Brad Steinmetz at steinmetz.25@osu.edu or the SMU DataArts Support Center from 9am to 7pm ET, Monday through Friday. Call us at 877-707-DATA (877-707-3282) or email help@culturaldata.org. We've also created a webinar that walks through the full survey document here: https://vimeo.com/745154482

Please share with your colleagues, staff and friends in the field. Thank you!

    With appreciation,
    Brad Steinmetz, MFA (he/him)
