  • 1.  Sustainable Museum Exhibition Handbook

    Posted 10 days ago

I am writing a book through AAM called, "The Sustainable Museum Exhibition Handbook," scheduled to be released in 2026. I am looking for case studies from museums that have had success and failures that they would be willing to share in the following categories:

    1. Design for Human Health
    2. Design for Social Health and Equity
    3. Design for Ecosystem Health
    4. Design for Climate Health
    5. Design for the Circular Economy

If you have a story that you would like to contribute, send me an email with a brief description and perhaps a photo, if it is helpful.

    Hi Douglas,

This is great to hear Douglas.

I think you already know about the NISE Network materials:

    Professional learning resources

    • These resources include the 2021 publication:
Weller N. and R. Ostman (2021). Sustainability and Museums: A Workbook for Improving Operations, Engaging Communities, and Creating Partnerships, Tempe, AZ: Arizona State University.

Also NISE Network has more museum sustainability public engagement resources here:

    Hello Douglas,

I think we may have met at a NEMA conference in the past.  In fact, I think we both had a seminar on sustainability back to back two years ago.

My part of the discussion on sustainability was from the perspective of manufacturing reusable museum products.  As a company that specializes in reusable museum products, I promoted the concept of reusable being better than recyclable.  Our signage products allow you to use paper instead of Sintra (which can't be recycled at all).  Most of our products are manufactured in the US which lowers the shipping carbon footprint.  And investing in reusable products lowers the total cost of ownership over the long lifecycle of a well made product.

I sent you an email with some brochures.  let me know if you would like to discuss this further.
