  • 1.  Session for AAM conference

    Posted 10-14-2022 11:56 AM
For the annual meeting, I would like to propose a session about how museums are using AR or immersive technology (or apps, story recording, and QR codes) to tell stories and involve communities. Please let me know if you might be interested in being a panelist. Proposals are due by the 28th!

    Hi Lisa,

My company, Art Processors, uses technology (AR, VR Apps, Immersive tech) to allow multiple voices to be heard. We developed the "o" for MONA to allow for differing interpretations of art. The project Awaken may be a good case study for you, where we used AR and VR to help visitors to the gallery to experience first nations artifacts in the environment they were created.  We worked closely with representatives from various nations to make sure they were involved in telling their own story.

    Happy to chat more.

    Hi Lisa,

If you're interested in including how historic sites are using VR to expand on the stories they can tell on site, please have a look at Tracing Paint, a 6DOF experience of the artists' studio we created for the Pollock-Krasner House & Study Center in East Hampton, NY. It's also available on the Quest and HTC Vive headsets, which greatly expands the community that can access it.

    Best,

    Robin

There are many wonderful projects out there. It's interesting that all but one of the people who have responded work for commercial firms who put these digital experiences together. How can we get the museum staff perspective on using AR/VR/QR codes to engage and attract new audiences? While I'm open to having short introductions by some of these firms to set the tone for what can be done, I think the session would be more impactful if we also have some of the museum staff on the panel to talk about how visitors are using these and the museum's experience in developing content and interactivity and how museum staff work collaboratively with others in the community/audiences in the process of developing (and using) these products, as well as with the developers of the tech. I'd love us to be able to address-do these new digital tools allow us to collaborate more broadly, increase audience engagement, and reach new audiences as well as how do these projects actually play out-what are the steps for someone to do this, is this feasible if you don't have big budgets?

    Hi Lisa,

I am the Curator of Digital Experience at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. We recently partnered with Electric Playhouse, a 24,000 sq ft digital playspace, to create an immersive Georgia O'Keeffe experience in Albuquerque, New Mexico (about an hour from our museum in Santa Fe). The experience, called Music for the Eyes, leads viewers through O'Keeffe's creative process and inspiration, featuring digital storytelling, large-scale digital projections, interactive displays, and animation of O'Keeffe artworks.

Our curatorial team worked closely with the creative developers at Electric Playhouse to envision the concepts, the experience journey, and to provide expertise surrounding the art and life of the artist. The experience has a 2-month run and includes representations of 55 artworks. One of our goals was to gauge response to this type of immersive experience and we have gained some insights that we would love to share!

This might not have been what you were thinking about. I've been quite keen for us as a museum to see what we can create outside of our walls for broader and different kinds of storytelling and access. We've also been thinking about it in terms of how and when to integrate this into the museum itself, particularly since we are in the midst of building a new museum space.

Let me know if this would be of interest in partnering with you on a presentation.
    Thanks,
    Liz

    Hi Lisa,

I work for Eddie Carbin who would like to participate in the panel discussion.  If you were at ASTC in Pittsburgh, he recently spoke there on a similar topic.  His stories have included monarch butterflies, dinosaurs, insects, salmon migration and more.  He currently is an exhibit designer for the Exploratorium and an independent contractor for other science and tech museums.  He focuses on STEAM exhibit designs for all ages using immersive technologies. By using AR and other technologies, its easy to create learning experiences in a fun and playful setting.  Please let me know how to participate.
