  • 1.  Seeking young museums for AAM 2025 panel

    Posted 09-04-2024 05:03 PM

Hi - I run the Brooklyn Seltzer Museum, a very small institution that has just entered its second year. I am thinking of putting together a panel of VERY new museums (maybe small one, but size might be irrelevant) to share stories from our recent birthing and lessons learned that might still be of value to older institutions. If you'd like to chat about shaping a panel for AAM 2025 with me, please let me know in the next few days.

    Hi Barry,

I'm the founding director of The Peale, Baltimore's Community Museum. We started up in 2017, and are based in the first museum built in the Americas. This is the 1814 building's 3rd run as a museum, among several other uses by the city. If going on 8 years old isn't too "mature" for you, I'd be happy to share our experiences!

I'll also be at MAAM in Philadelphia Oct 8 of this year for the Community Museums Workshop and networking event, which may attract a number of new museums as well.

    All the best,

    Nancy

Hi Nancy. You had me at "Hi"! :-) (I think we once traveled back to a MW in a taxi from the Museum of Jurassic Technology together).

I'm thinking along the lines of: Mistakes Were Made: Lessons From New Museums. How does that strike you?

Mine can be the youngest museum, yours can be the oldest, and now we just need 1-2 more in the 2-7 year range.

And good idea to look for folks at MAAM. I will be there ONLY for the one session I am presenting: Leveling Up- Designing a Community Generated Video Game Exhibition - Wednesday, October 9, 2024, 1:45 pm-3:00 pm. Watch for me there!

    Any other takers?

    Barry

    Hi Barry,

I'm the curator of the Robertsdale Museum, which interprets the East Broad Top Railroad National Historic Landmark, the oldest surviving narrow-gauge railroad east of the Rocky Mountains. We're four years old, located in a very rural area, staffed entirely by volunteers, and just beginning to implement professional museum management practices.  If this is a good fit for your panel, we'd love to join you!
