Seeking museums that offer accessible programming for adults with dementia

  • 1.  Seeking museums that offer accessible programming for adults with dementia

    Posted 06-23-2023 11:27 AM

I am interested in connecting with museums that are already offering programming for adults with dementia and their caregivers to learn more about your experience with developing such a program.  For the last 15 years I have been facilitating a creative hands-on sensory-based experience in long term care communities that engages a wide variety of abilities.  I am curious to see if such a program would be valuable in a museum setting as well, so I would love to learn more about what is working and what is not with accessible programming, and how museums would like to move forward (or not) with these endeavors.  If you are more comfortable reaching out to me personally, my email is nicole@trayplay.com.  Thanks.

    Hi Nicole,

I suggest you check out SPARK!  for some institutions that do something similar to what you describe in a museum setting. Hope this helps!

    Hello, Nicole,

I did a quick online search using keywords of 'museums with dementia programs', of course. Here are three of the many resources:

On a broader scale, a grass roots initiative related to the intersection of health and museums, started in late 2020 by Annie Thomas-Bubel, Learning Programs Coordinator at the Nemours Estate in Wilmington, Delaware. With over 100 museum professionals responding to Annie's meeting invitation, various committees subsequently formed to discuss things like horticultural therapy, patient programming with museums, research on the topic, training medical professionals to work with museum staff to offer museums experiences on/offsite, etc.

On another note, organizations supportive of the intersection of health and museums include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • AAM: American Alliance of Museums -- https://www.aam-us.org/  (Membership is required to access most info on health/wellness, including a  Museums, Health and Wellness Compendium)
    • NOAH: National Organization of Arts in Health-- https://thenoah.net/

I am also passionate about this topic, so feel free to contact me to chat further! As an independent museum professional and an occupational therapist, I have a unique perspective, having worked with people who have dementia, Alzheimer's Disease as well as those who have had strokes, spinal cord injuries, schizophrenia, PTSD and autism.. among other conditions.

Following up on Terrie's excellent recommendations.

I am a board member for the National Organization of Arts and Health (NOAH) so I am happy to connect and share programs.

And, Ray Williams is an incredible practitioner in this space. I was lucky to learn from him in grad school. He is the head of Education at the Blanton and previously was at Harvard & RISD. His work is all about using the museum to serve communities and a big piece of that is within healthcare. Here is an article about his work with older adults: https://www.jstor.org/stable/43305808. And he wrote a book about activating the museum for healthcare professionals: https://www.amazon.com/Activating-Art-Museum-Experiences-Professions-ebook/dp/B0BSP6XPDR

    All the best,
    Elysian

    Hi Terrie,

Thank you for sharing such valuable resources.  I twas actually by attending the MuseumNext summit on Health in Wellness that made me more intrigued about the work of some museums regarding health and wellness!  Very cool stuff happening around the world.  It was on that summit that I learned and Annie and her work as well :)

I would love to learn more about your work as an independent museum professional.  I have emailed you directly.  Thank you so much for your response and I look forward to further connecting.

    Hi Annie,

Thanks so much for your response.  You just reminded me that my daughter and I need to make a visit to Nemours Estate soon!  I learned about you in the winter time, so I was just waiting... I would love to join your monthly calls.  I have it down on my calendar for July.
