  • 1.  Question about Scanners and Scanning Companies

    Hello Friends in the AMA Community:

    I am looking for recommendations for products and services for a small publishing company digitization and archive project:

    1.  I need an office scanner that can scan newspaper-sized articles and artwork, and that can also be used for smaller flat papers and photos. Is there anything in the consumer product world out there that you have found affordable and useful  for everyday use and that fits in a small office? 

    2. Also, do you have recommendations for a scanning company that can take on a project or about 1000 articles in different sizes --broadsheet and community newspaper size- still in original newspapers and magazines?. The content is not "too old" or crumbly (for the most part). It's been preserved for 30-50 years.

    Hi Laurie,

    Our museum purchased the CZUR PRO ET-24 scanner.  It is affordable, lightweight, and sits on a desktop.  I have been using it to archive scrapbooks with phots and newspaper clippings, magazines, and catalogs.  It features the ability to scan an open book, and it will flatten the center curve.  This one will scan up to 13 x 19" pages, but you also have the ability to "stitch" the pages together if scanning something larger.  If scanning a glossy page, it has included side lights to remove the glare.  After scanning, you can save the files as searchable PDFs.  It also has advanced character recognition, so can recognize several languages and characters.   I have been using it for over 6 months now and find it perfect for this purpose.     I use an Epson V600 for my office scanning.  It produces jpegs or pdfs.  It comes with a fixture that allows you to "develop" 35mm slides and photo negatives.  Will create very high resolution images but can be adjusted down.

    The Epson v600, if you can find it, is the best flatbed under $500 and has been for a very long time. You can step up in the "v" line if you need better or can't find the 600. Unless your needs are extreme, the v600 is all the scanner you will ever need. Make sure what you buy includes the transparency accessories. You will regret it someday if you don't have the transparency features for slides and negatives. I think all v600s are sold with transparency features but check.
