Planning and Preparing for America's 250th
In January 2024, members of the President Lincoln's Cottage team spearheaded an open-ended convening of 20 museum practitioners, consultants, academic historians, and social scientists to ask big questions about America at 250. With no pre-determined outcome, this group dug into the emotions surrounding this anniversary and discussed how to cultivate belonging among their constituents and how to diversify messaging around the 250th to account for the complexities of American history. The participants established a multi-disciplinary community of practice to help guide Lincoln's Cottage and the field at large toward an empathetic approach to this impending anniversary.
Cameron Walpole is the Associate Director of Interpretation and Public Programs and Callie Hawkins is the CEO and Executive Director at President Lincoln's Cottage, a museum and historic site in Washington, DC. Together, they are responsible for strengthening the organization's public programming. Their nationally recognized initiatives--tours, exhibits, and programs--focus on Abraham Lincoln's humanity.
