Finding Your Museum's Civic Mission
As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026, it is more important than ever that people in the museum field connect the past to the present, art and science to current issues. Sarah Jencks will introduce the idea, explored in a recent AAM blog post, of articulating your institution's particular civic strategy. She will also explore how using the tools in the Educating for American Democracy roadmap can help integrate inquiry and civic learning into your exhibitions, programs, and resources.
As founder and principal of Every Museum a Civic Museum, Sarah Jencks works with museums and historic sites to help them articulate their authentic civic missions and issues of field-wide concern, including the upcoming 250th anniversary of the U.S. founding. Sarah is co-chair of the Educating for American Democracy Community Learning Partners task force. For 15 years, Jencks was Director of Education and Interpretation at Ford's Theatre Society and before that taught middle school. Sarah serves on the boards of the National Council for History Education and Literacy InterActives.
