Making Museums Matter: Havoc, Hard Work, and Humanity
How do museums navigate the storms of crises, from pandemics to political upheaval? In an age of rapid change, can we ensure art and culture matters, or are we losing touch with the communities we aim to serve? What does it mean to be a leader in such turbulent times-can patience and resilience really stand up to the forces of divisiveness and uncertainty? And when everything feels uncertain, how can we avoid posturing and instead show real, tangible progress? This presentation challenges us to rethink museums' roles in society and explore how community engagement and shared authority can drive meaningful progress.
Jessimi Jones is the Executive Director of the Springfield Museum of Art with over 20 years of experience in museum education, community engagement, and leadership. Since joining the Springfield Museum in 2020, she has guided the museum through a major renovation, the completion of a capital campaign, and the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic while launching new community-focused initiatives. She holds a master's degree in Leadership in Museum Education from Bank Street College and a bachelor's degree in Art History from Kent State University.
