Reinventing the Museum: The imperative to reimagine museums
The realities of the world require museums and their leaders to engage with communities and diverse cultures across the globe to address long embedded entitlement, injurious actions, and operative assumptions to deconstruct the colonial museum model and recreate a more relevant and inclusive institution. Such a shift challenges all aspects of museums from attitudes about collections to how to create meaningful public engagement to strategies to ensure enlightened leadership, and much more – top to bottom and inside out. It starts with deep assessment, naming wrongs and defining corrective steps, consistently working with constituents, and abandoning harmful, racist and exclusionary practices. It is the long game. This is transformational change.
Gail Anderson, president, Gail Anderson & Associates, facilitates institutional planning and transformation. Prior to opening a consulting firm in 2002, Anderson chaired the Graduate Department of Museum Studies at John F. Kennedy University for 12 years. Anderson has held leadership positions at The Mexican Museum, Museum Management Consultants, the Southwest Museum, and the Museum of Northern Arizona. Her most recent book, the 3rd edition of Reinventing the Museum: Relevance, Inclusion, and Global Responsibilities was published in 2023.
