    Beyond 250: the Next Generation of State and Local History


    The 250th demonstrated the resilience of state and local history organizations despite many challenges. Strong networks, professional practices, and community focus enabled meaningful work to continue while highlighting the need for stronger national collaboration, closer ties between academic and public history, and broader, locally driven advocacy. Looking ahead, AASLH aims to build on the momentum through its History & Democracy Initiative, expanded year-round advocacy, enhanced professional development, and partnerships that position history organizations as central to education, civic life, and community development.

     

    John Dichtl has led the American Association for State and Local History as president & CEO since 2015. Prior to that he was the executive director of the National Council on Public History (NCPH) from 2006 to 2015 and deputy director of the Organization of American Historians from 2000 to 2005. John received his MA and PhD in early American history from Indiana University.
