  • 1.  New to AAM - Connecting With Other Civil War Museums and Battlefields

    Posted 04-02-2023 01:33 PM

Hi there! My name is Aaron Gates and I'm the interpretive ranger at Mansfield State Historic Site in Louisiana. I'm new to AAM and hoping to connect with others who interpret, curate, or are employed with American Civil War museums and battlefields. Also, would like to meet anyone who just works with military history in general. Glad to be here!

    Hi Aaron,
Welcome to AAM. I am currently doing content development work for American Battlefield Trust on their Revolutionary War projects, in advance of America 250.
We are working on an extensive project in South Carolina called The Liberty Trail, which connects many of the Southern Campaign battle sites. We have created a mobile tour app, which is enhanced by AR experiences, 360 views and StoryCorps interviews, among others.
We are currently working on creating a physical traveling exhibit for the American Revolution Experience, and will be building out a list of host venues (west of the Mississippi River) in the next months.
However, American Battlefield Trust also preserves, protects and interprets Civil War battlefields. Here is an AR experience for Gettysburg (you don't have to be onsite to experience it). They have many other Civil War resources on their site.
Let me know if you are interested in learning more.

Thank you for this and so sorry for the delay in reply. Been a busy six months. I would love to have an AR experience here at Mansfield, but not sure how to create one or go about funding it. Any info you have would be very welcome!

    Hi Aaron,

We are an AR Studio specializing in augmented reality (AR) placemaking, activations, and tours. We have helped a number of museums, parks, and non-profits in the arts, culture, and heritage sectors create augmented reality content, experiences and apps in the U.S. and Canada. Happy to chat with you about the possibilities. Feel free to reach out or grab a time on my calendar https://calendly.com/julia-beabout

    Hi Aaron,

Welcome to AAM.  I work for the Missouri State Museum in Jefferson City.  We interpret the Civil War in our exhibits as one part of our broader mission.  We have an extensive collection of Missouri Civil War battle flags.  The museum is also part of the Missouri State Parks system and there are several parks and historic sites across Missouri dedicated to Civil War interpretation.  I am not sure if staff at many of those sites utilize AAM directly so here is some info. on how to contact them.
Battle of Athens State Historic Site -  contact Melissa Pitford  @ melissa.pitford@dnr.mo.gov
Battle of Island Mound State Historic Site - contact Kimberly Pedigo @ kimberly.pedigo@dnr.mo.gov
Battle of Lexington State Historic Site- contact Chris Fritsche @ chris.fritsche@dnr.mo.gov
Confederate Memorial State Historic Site - same as above
Battle of Carthage State Historic Site - contact Elizabeth Bazal @ elizabeth.bazal@dnr.mo.gov
Battle of Pilot Knob State Historic Site - contact Brick Autry @ brick.autry@dnr.mo.gov

There are other Missouri historic sites in the system who also interpret the Civil War as it relates to their broader mission. Another resource would be the head of interpretation for Missouri State Parks which is Alison Dubbert.  Alison was also formerly the head of a state-wide Civil War markers for State Parks field exhibits program so she has a lot of direct knowledge about how the topic has been interpreted across Missouri.  She can be reached at alison.dubbert@dnr.mo.gov  if she doesn't have the answer she will definitely point you to those who do.

Welcome again to AAM, I hope you find this information and the listserv in general helpful going forward.

There is already an existing community of military historians that is part of AASLH.   They can probably help you find your Civil War museum/battlefield colleagues more easily.

    Stay safe,

Thank you Janice. I am also an AASLH member. Is there a forum for the military history group or a social media page? When I first joined earlier this year, I was never able to find one.

Thank you, Katherine! I apologize for the delay in response. Thank you for giving me these contacts in Missouri! It is hard to find other Civil War historians and interpreters that specifically work with the Trans-Mississippi Theater of the Civil War.
