Museums and Exhibits tackling the subject of Addiction

    Hello everyone,

We are starting a project on the subject of drugs and addiction, but we wanted to get references on how other museums and exhibits are presenting this sensitive topic. Any references that you know about?

    Thank you!

    Hello Maribel,

The Indiana State Museum had FIX: Heartbreak and Hope Inside Our Opioid Crisis in 2020/2021 (sadly to limited audiences in person because of COVID). Thay have kept a page about it with additional resources on their website: https://www.indianamuseum.org/experience/fix-heartbreak-hope/

I came here to say the same thing about the Indiana State Museum. I was part of a team that put together a proposal on this exhibit but our team was not selected. It was to designed to be a travelling exhibit, not sure if that was the direction it ended up but that might be a good resource.

HI! We actually worked with Indiana State on this project and helped them to design the Fix! Exhibit. We would be happy to share our experience developing the project and what we learned!

There was a great MuseumNext article on the topic.

I didn't see it, but I heard good things about "Hooked" at Emory University in Atlanta.

This exhibit at Forbes House Museum (now digital only) talked about the family's relationship to the Opium trade. This was a history exhibit that brought visitors into the 21st century at the end. It won several awards. https://www.forbeshousemuseum.org/digital-opium-exhibit/

Science Gallery Atlanta's inaugural exhibition, Hooked: When Want Becomes Need, in 2022, was an immersive art exhibition featuring work by America and European artists and researchers, themed on addiction. Exhibits covered the wide gamut of the topic, from the neurological mechanics to the lived experience, from drug addiction to addiction to shopping and phones. It was based on a similar exhibition at Science Gallery London a few years earlier.

The organizers of the Atlanta show have moved on to other institutions, but I was the designer and my company, Flutter & Wow worked with artists and installed the exhibition, if you'd like more information I'd be happy to share.

I suggest you contact the Indiana State Museum. This was a very powerful etching with a lot of community input. We also hosted a traveling version at Minnetrista Museum & Gardens.

Such an impactful project to undertake, @Maribel Ibarra. And I love all the ideas and examples from folks. I was curious about this, because I know addiction research and the American "war on drugs" can be biased. I found a couple examples that seem to be interesting.

The INTO LIGHT Project –mentioned, "Drug Addiction: Real People, Real Stories," seems like a powerful example of real life impact. They're portrait-and-narrative exhibitions installed state by state, each showing 30-40 graphite portraits of people who died from addiction, paired with short life stories; the explicit aim is to humanize addiction and reduce stigma.

There's also one from the Museum of Addiction & Recovery that got me down a rabbit hole. It's a virtual museum that curates artworks and stories by people in active addiction and recovery, plus pop‑up shows like "The Madness & Me: Art from the Edges of Addiction" and "Redemption Through Creation."

HOOKED: When Want Becomes Need is an interactive art–science exhibition through Science Gallery Atlanta that explicitly frames addiction through a public health lens and emphasizes that "no one is exempt," exploring many forms of compulsive behavior, not only drugs.

Here's one I found that seems interesting if you're looking for a different viewpoint: DEA Museum and traveling exhibits ("Drugs: Costs and Consequences"). It's permanent and traveling exhibits that emphasize enforcement, policy history, and the societal costs of drug use, including interactive displays and artifacts.

I like that these have themes and practices like humanizing over moralizing, public health framing, lived-experience collaboration, and local data plus local stories (as you know, storytelling is so powerful.) I hope you find some solid inspiration in these conversations!

    Hello Maribel,

I had the pleasure of working on this project at Peabody Essex Museum in collaboration with Bluecadet. It has been on view for 7 years and remains powerful. https://www.pem.org/blog/every-eleven-minutes

    Hello,

The Drug Enforcement Administration has an excellent museum, which was redone only a few years ago. It is free and open to the public. As the former Curator of Education, I highly recommend reaching out to current staff through the website. https://museum.dea.gov/

We went through an extensive stakeholder review process that included families, researchers, educators, and outside historians. SAMHSA is a terrific resource and partner.

    All the best,

    Hi Maribel,

The Indiana State Museum staff wrote a blog post for AAM about the Fix exhibition others have mentioned, in case it's helpful: https://www.aam-us.org/2020/03/04/why-were-covering-the-opioid-crisis-at-the-indiana-state-museum/

We also have a recorded session from one of our recent Annual Meetings about the John Michael Kohler Arts Center's partnerships with local recovery organizations here: https://www.aam-us.org/2024/07/25/destigmatize-addiction-disorder-fostering-partnerships-for-systemic-change/ (for this one you'll need an AAM member login.)

Best of luck with your exhibition!

    Great initiative.

In my experience, escape from addiction requires "hitting bottom" or, at least, experiencing a wound so deep that light can penetrate and cause an awakening. The sharing of those experiences is one of the keys to success of 12 step programs. I would think that including some of this would be one key to success in your project. I would suggest reaching out to any local, open twelve step groups to find folks to collaborate with. I expect they could help in many stages of project design but would certainly be a critical focus group for evaluations.

Hello and thanks to everyone who reference our exhibition Fix: Heartbreak and Hope Inside Our Opioid Crisis at the Indiana State Museum. We had great community partners and an excellent team who brought their experiences and passion to the project, which was created to increase understanding and reduce stigma.

Maribel, our chief officer of engagement, Brian Mancuso, would be happy to talk with you. He can be reached at
