Children as Co-Creators: Rethinking Freedom and Structure in Informal Learning
Balancing Voice and Design in Museum and Community Spaces

In 2025, educator Chang Xu challenged how museums design learning experiences for children, arguing that young visitors are often treated as "small adults" rather than a distinct audience see attached). Too often, programs are structured as static sites of education instead of dynamic, responsive learning environments. As the field shifts toward empowerment and participation, how do we better center children's voices while maintaining intentional design? This session explores that tension through a case study of Club Fridays at the Bronx River Community Center, offering potential strategies for positioning children as co-creators within informal learning spaces.

Dejá N. Santiago is the Director of Education at Children's Arts & Science Workshops, Inc., where she leads the design and implementation of hands-on, inquiry-based programs serving K–12 students and community learners across the Bronx. Celebrating a decade of experience in museum and informal education-including roles at the American Museum of Natural History and the Bronx Children's Museum-she brings a deep commitment to inclusive, community-centered learning. Dejá holds an M.S. Ed in Leadership in Museum Education from Bank Street College and a degree in Bioarchaeology, and is a National Geographic Certified Educator. She is also a published author, contributing the chapter "Change & Opportunity: Resilience in a VUCA World" in Change Is Required: Preparing for the Post-Pandemic Museum. A proud Bronx native, Girl Scout Leader, and systems thinker, Dejá was recently honored with a City Council Citation for her dedication to expanding access and opportunity through education.
