  • 1.  looking for archaeological wet collections workshop/contact person

    Is anyone aware of workshops or training courses that involve conservation of wet materials from archaeological sites? Particularly referring to seeds, fiber materials such as fishing nets, and wood. 

    Alternatively, if you have the contact information for a conservator who specializes in these techniques I would equally appreciate that information.

    Two places come to mind.

    The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, in Vergennes, VT. They conduct underwater archaeological work, and they may work with some of the materials you described.

    The Makah Museum in Neah Bay, WA. Specifically, they protect objects from the Ozette Archaeological Site, which was a seaside community that was buried under a mudslide and preserved under anoxic conditions. I believe they have discovered items like textiles and food.

    Reach out to The Mariners' Museum and Park. The director is Will Hoffman. They have a huge conservation lab and are working on many items from the Civil War ironclad, USS Monitor. https://monitorcenter.org/
