  • 1.  Long term use of muslin in storage

Hi all. I am looking for biodegradable and respectful storage solution for NAGPRA assemblages that will still meet collection management standards for preservation. I had the thought to sew custom pouches with unbleached muslin for burial storage but haven't been able to find anything concrete on how long the muslin will preserve in storage. I may just use tyvek but would love any input on the longevity of muslin or other non plastic materials that have worked for others. Thank you for any responses!

    Basil,
This is something we talk about in our Materials for Exhibit, Moving, and Storage online course at Museum Study. You may find the Conservation Wiki helpful.

Unbleached muslin gets used in lots of other collections roles: textile storage, to cover furniture pieces, in book repair...  Not to mention antique muslin items in some costume collections!
