    Silver Lining: How Federal Attacks Are Reviving Popular Interest in History

    While Philadelphia has been deeply concerned with the removal of interpretive signage from the President's House, similar vandalism is happening around the country to sites related to Native, African American, gender, immigrant, and Japanese history, as well as signs referring to climate change. Resistance is heavy though, varying from legal filings to political websites to satire. We'll explore the meanings and prospects of this struggle between the government and the populace. 

    Raised in and around the Great Lakes, Dr Sharon Holt earned her Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania in 1991. She divided her career between academic teaching and public history, retiring from Penn State Abington in 2023. Author of Making Freedom Pay: North Carolina Freedpeople Working for Themselves, Holt was part of an activist push to assure interpretation of slavery at the President's House, and works now with the coalition to defend the site.
