    La Lotería as Creative Resistance: Critical Education and Home Knowledge in Classroom Spaces

    Dr. Luis-Genaro Garcia, Professor of Art Education, California State University Sacramento

    Dr. Luis-Genaro Garcia shares how educators can draw on students' familial and cultural knowledge as assets for their social consciousness and academic development through the game of La Lotería. He will provide classroom tools and resources to help educators develop culturally relevant and interdisciplinary teaching practices that critique issues of race, class, and gender in our communities.

    Join us following the webinar for a more in-depth discussion with Dr. Garcia. He will further share the process of exploring Home Knowledge and La Lotería as Creative Resistance.

    Dr. Luis-Genaro Garcia is an artist, scholar, and was a high school art teacher in South Central Los Angeles for 14 years, influenced by critical education theory. As an educator, Dr. Garcia draws on the arts and students' socio-political, cultural, and communal knowledge as a tool for social consciousness and transformation, and to spotlight the social and political barriers (past and present) that exist in marginalized communities. He is currently an assistant professor of art education at Sacramento State University, closely working with communities through community-engaged practices.

    Thank you! I signed up and can hopefully jump on the webinar later.
    It has been interesting to see how Lotería iconography has been used as art and entertainment. Especially, in a locally owned bar here that has Lotería themed drinks and events. I'm curious to see how Dr. Garcia interprets Chalupa in the classroom.
