  • 1.  Job posting advice?

    Posted 10-04-2022 11:42 AM
    Hello. I am the curator at the Reher Center for Immigrant Culture and History, and have a part-time educator position to advertise. I am soliciting advice regarding where to post it, as we have no budget for posting. I've already sent the listing to the NCPH website and we are reaching out to local and regional universities with teaching and museum studies programs. Thank you for any recommendations.

    Sincerely, Sarah Gordon

    Do you all have social media accounts? You could see if it would be possible to request that the posting be shared on all of those sites. Also, through AAM, and any local museum organizations in your state. I have also posted on local neighborhood groups on Facebook (with permission from our organization). Also, in Virginia, a couple of organizations post jobs for nonprofits for free. You might just google and see if you can find any of those for your state. Good luck! It's a hard market right now.

    Sarah, You could also try Museum-ed.org's list serv. This way it goes to Museum Educators specifically - directions on how to sign up are on the website.
    In any social media you post,  #NYCMER and @NYCMER  This is the NYC Museum Education Roundtable and although they charge a fee for posting jobs, perhaps this will get some folks in the area who follow them to take note.

    Thank you, Claudia. I've forwarded your suggestions to my colleague who directs our education programs. We're in Kingston, NY so the NYC networks might be useful. Thanks again.

    Thank you, Lauren. Yes, we have social media accounts and have posted it there. We are trying to avoid paywalls due to our budget constraints. We have robust local networks (we are in Kingston, New York, in the Hudson Valley) but have struggled to find people! - Sarah

    Hi all,
    Here are a couple more tips. I can't guarantee they still do it, but I've been able to post jobs for free on Indeed in the past. Using your personal LinkedIn account is also a great option. Also, if you or your organization are already members of different professional organizations, sometimes as part of your membership you can post jobs on their sites for free. For example, where I'm located the Association of Midwest Museums offers unlimited free job postings for members, as does my state museum association.

    Good luck!

    Hi Sarah -

    Two good places to post:

    National Association for Interpretation (NAI), https://interpnet.com (not sure if you need to be a member);

    International Museum Theatre Alliance (IMTAL), http://imtal-us.org/post-a-job

    Good luck!

    Great discussion and resources.
    We have an open position for Education Program Coordinator and I have been sharing with Emerging Museum Professionals Facebook groups. Also, sending direct messages to colleague within our own museum network. You never know who someone may know.

    I don't do the HR work, but I know that our positions get posted to our website directly.
