Please join us next Thursday when we will discuss new ways of designing more equitable access to arts and culture.

Designing More Equitable Access to Art and Culture

Prior to the pandemic, people living in vulnerable areas already had limited access to cultural opportunities. Today, those scarce opportunities are at a higher risk of disappearing. Turnout NYC has created a model for how to leverage public spaces as accessible venues for arts and culture. Led by Design Trust for Public Space, a nonprofit organization dedicated to activating and transforming shared public spaces to create a more just, equitable, and sustainable city, and SITU, an architectural practice centered on social and creative impact, the project designed and prototyped flexible and semi-permanent outdoor venues-one in each of the 5 boroughs of NYC- in collaboration with cultural partners from within each community. Beyond hosting a summer of creative events for New Yorkers, this transformational model proposes a new way to provide equitable access to the arts and support for artists.

Katie Shima, AIA, RA Director of Design

Katie, a Registered Architect in New York, serves as SITU's Director of Design and leads a wide range of projects within the studio's interdisciplinary portfolio. These include Making Space with the Brooklyn Public Library, now in its 10th iteration, and Turnout NYC for the Mellon Foundation. She also recently led the design for a four-building Google campus in California, a pavilion and campus strategy for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Design Lab, a 10,000 sq ft makerspace used for science education at the New York Hall of Science. As a working artist, Katie brings a unique ability to create thoughtful and engaging experiences through architecture. She has also taught in the Architecture department at Columbia & Barnard Colleges and the GSAPP.

    Johnathon Smith Associate Project Manager

Johnathon joined SITU as a designer in 2019. His background in architectural design
and representation contributes to the studio's innovative solutions and the visual
communication of each project. As an Associate Project Manager, Johnathon recently led the design of SITU's work for Turnout NYC. He also was a key designer on Making Space for the Brooklyn Public Library. This new, collaborative initiative brought cultural programming to temporary venues across New York City's boroughs during the summer of 2022. Prior to joining SITU, Johnathon worked at Lynch Eisinger Design in New York, NY and interned at Olson Kundig in Seattle, WA. Johnathon holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Florida and a Bachelor of Design in Architecture from the University of Central Florida.
