As part of the collaborative initiative between the PlastIC Innovation + Curation Research Centre (PlastIC) and the Museum of Design in Plastics (MoDiP) at Arts University Bournemouth, we are conducting an international survey on the use, care, and interpretation of plastics within museological practice.
This research seeks to better understand how museums around the world engage with plastic materials, not only in collections, exhibitions, conservation, or public programming, but also in daily operations and museological routines where plastic may be present without formal documentation or curatorial intent. We are particularly interested in how plastic surfaces, tools, packaging, and display components shape museum workflows and decision-making, even when they fall outside traditional collecting frameworks.
Our aim is to identify shared challenges, innovative approaches, and emerging needs across institutions of varying scales and contexts. We warmly invite curators, conservators, educators, researchers, and museum professionals from all regions to contribute by completing the survey. Your insights will help shape sector-wide guidelines and inform future collaborations across heritage, design, and material science.
