  • 1.  Hanging Hardware for 2D Artwork

    Posted 02-01-2023 12:48 PM
    Hi Everyone,

I am reworking our art installation guidelines, and have a question about best practices when it comes to hardware. While we hang only on d-rings, when researching the wall hooks I'm coming across zinc plated and brass plated. I would like to know if one over the other is safer to use and has better lasting quality.

    Thank you!

    Hi Kathryne,

Plating isn't as important as hanger design.

There are two that are common, one is commonly referred to as a "Bulldog" hanger, after the main company that makes them.  They are a bent steel design. The weight capacities are achieved by increasing the size of the hanger, each size utilizes only one nail.  In my experience, they are more prone to bending and failure.

The other is "Floreat" style hanger, a stamped steel design with a reinforced bend. They come in several load rating sizes: 10#, 20#, 30#, 50#, and 75#.  The 10, 20 and 30 utilize one nail, the 50 utilizes two nails, and the 75 utilizes three nails.  The provided nails are hardened, and though they will bend under severe circumstances, I've never had the hanger itself fail.  Some (but not all) makers of this style also provide a hole that can be used to screw the hanger to the wall in addition to nailing, which provides that extra measure of comfort.

While searching for images to include, I came across this article by Chris Paschke, a noted author and program presenter in the picture framing industry, which goes into greater depth.  Ziabicki Imports, the company Chris refers to in the article is no longer in business, but apparently you can order the genuine Floreat from Tradecraft Supply online.

Regarding best practices, If you are concerned with seismic issues, a d-ring on a picture hanger shouldn't be your first choice.  You could look at a cleat hanging system with a security screw, security plates, or standard security hardware, available for metal or wood frames.  Of course adding different hardware to the frame depends on ownership and permissions, but those are my suggestions.

    I hope this helps,

    Scott
