  • 1.  Found in Vault - possible Mughal works

    Posted 04-13-2023 01:37 PM

    Hi everyone,

I am doing some much needed Spring cleaning and found a few objects in our vault that I am trying to identify. Would any of you be able to identify these? Or have seen similar works in your collection?

    Thank you!

The first painting is of Lord Krishna, and the scenery the  painting covers suggests it originates most probably from Pahari Style of Miniatures. For others, they are either Mughal or Provincial Sultanates miniatures, but to go in further, I need to know the exact time period of the last two paintings. If it is possible, can you share with me the estimated time period of the last two miniatures. Thank you.

    Hi Parth,

Unfortunately, the only information that I have about the artworks is that they were anonymously donated to the museum more than 10 years ago. There is no accompanying documentation or markings on the prints.

Thank you for identifying Lord Krishna, it helps my research.

    Thank you,
    Zulma

    Dear Zulma,

I'd like to suggest that the first painting depicts the Hindu god Vishnu in his incarnation as a fish-Matsya. This is the first of his ten main incarnations.

    My best,
