  • 1.  Family Guide examples of supplementary material

    Posted 01-18-2023 09:18 PM
I'm reading The Museum Educator's Manual and just learned about family guides, separate publications to guide families visiting museums together. Would anyone, perhaps members from a children's museum, be willing to share links or PDF examples of this?

Our museum is just developing family-centered programming. Would love to see how more established programs are meeting these visitors' needs, thanks!

This isn't my museum but I have always enjoyed the Family Guides from the Ringling Museum in Sarasota, FL. There's a regular Family Guide and also a Nudity Guide, which may not apply to your museum but is excellent.

    Hello JM,
I'm attaching 2 examples of family guides that I designed for specific exhibitions at the Smithsonian:
    1. The Great Inka road (bilingual guide), National Museum of the American Indian
    2. For All the World to See/Civil Rights, National Museum of African American History and Culture

Feel free to reach out directly if you'd like to brainstorm ideas. As Nicole mentioned, there seems to be an opportunity for a playful/fun guide with your museum!

We love our Art Discovery Guides here at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. We do them for families and adults, and we highlight our Carter Community Artists with a guide written by the new class as well. All our guides are translated into Spanish as well. You can read our current guides on our website here: Art Discovery Guides

To be honest, you don't need a special guide to navigate an art museum. But in case you'd like some direction, we're here to help! Families and adults can check out these guides that lead you through an adventure in our galleries.

    Thanks Madeleine.

Can I ask how Fresh Voices are different from adults and families files?

The Fresh Voices are written from the four annual Carter Community Artists' perspectives, whereas the adult and family Art Discovery Guides are written by staff and using the Museum's voice. They are definitely more geared toward an adult audience, but it's an opportunity to showcase our annual artist group and hear from local artists, rather than just the Museum. :)

The staff think of this as a family guide even though it is called the Children's Guide: https://www.nashvilleparthenon.com/s/Kidsville-at-the-Parthenon-Guide-2022.pdf
