Engaging users with tools to edit museum images

I'm interested in how museums choose to engage or discourage artistic 'remixing' of public domain images.

I know the NYPL has encouraged public domain experiments reusing their collection and the Cleveland Museum of Art has an online tool that lets you 'expand' artwork by having AI imagine it larger.

I have designed videos with 'then and now' presentations of old city photographs, and have wanted more tools to adjust the images.

How much belongs on the museum site? Is putting the tools right on the collection a way to increase engagement with the museum?

I wrote a blog post with some thoughts, and I'd love to hear more perspectives. I also show examples from some cyanotypes, which are one reason I want editing right on the page…

(FWIW I'm not a museum professional - I'm building museum software as a hobby in the hopes i can get my local museum to use it instead of PastPerfect, which is frustrating to search and browse. I'm hoping to learn so I can offer a compelling alternative!)
