We got a donation of a very elaborate rifle with a gold colored inlay of a man's head. The man has a moustache and is wearing a round helmet with horns and in the center is a plus sign over a horizontal crescent moon. Does anyone know what this image could be?
The gun is a 1863 Sharps carbine .52 that was converted in 1867 to .50-70. It has the name R.A. LaLancette stamped in the rifle. We don't know anything about the history but research shows a number of this exact style of gun were sold by the US to the French to be used in the Franco-Prussian War.
Any information is greatly appreciated.
