To my fellow museum professionals,
My name is Zoe, and I am a doctoral candidate in Florida State University’s Museum Education and Visitor-Centered Curation program. I am conducting a research project on the sense of belonging among museum changemakers and would like to invite you to participate in an online survey.
Changemakers are people who pursue social, environmental, and/or political change in their work. They often embrace people-centered and community-based practices. They can be found in any level of an organization and in any role. Changemakers may work out in the open or in the background. Please note that this survey is open to all people who work in museums! You do not need to think of yourself as a changemaker. If you currently work or previously worked in a museum or similar institution (including as a volunteer), then I hope you will complete the survey.
This survey is conducted via Qualtrics and consists of Likert-scale items, which will ask you to indicate your level of agreement with a series of statements related to belonging and changemaking. There is also an optional demographic section, which is included to help put responses into context and note any potential disparities among groups. Here, “demographics” not only describes racial and gender identities but also museum type, your role, and general geographic area (e.g., New England, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, and so on). Finally, there are two optional free response questions.
Participation is completely voluntary, and you can discontinue participation at any time without any penalty to you.
I expect the survey will take 10-15 minutes to complete.
Participants will not receive any financial compensation. Because there are demographic questions, there is a risk that your answers could be identified. There are no other anticipated direct risks or benefits. Potential societal benefits may include adding to the knowledge base in our profession and better understanding of the workforce, which could help map strategies for change. The data from this survey will be part of a dissertation and may also be presented at museum conferences.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me at zhume@fsu.edu. Please be aware that FSU emails are subject to Florida’s Public Records Law (Chapter 119 of the Florida Statutes), which requires the university to provide public records upon request. Alternative contact information can be provided upon request.
If you would like to participate, you can begin the survey here: https://fsu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_es0RPpd228eZ67Q
The survey will accept responses until June 30, 2025.
Thank you for your attention,
