Our docents are sometimes approached directly (i.e. not through the Museum) by a friend or community group to present Museum-related content. These might be paid or unpaid invitations. Sometimes the subject matter is similar to or the same as what an existing Museum speakers' bureau program might offer. Other times, a docent may want to accept the invitation and do their own research to address a topic loosely related to Museum content. Our docents are very part-time and we're in a small town and personal relationships/networks are strong.
We'd like to come up with guidelines that make the boundaries clear, both preserving Museum-sponsored programs and leaving room for docent research interests. Has anyone encountered this question? Do you have suggestions for guidelines?
Thanks for your advice,
