    Dear Colleagues,

I am interested in creating a deaccessioning policy and making space in our vault for future gifts that align with our collection policy. We have recently experienced a few staff changes, and I would like to learn more about your experiences in this area; any links to any resource you may have would be appreciated.

     Sincerely

Have you checked out the CMP Toolkit cmptoolkit.org? It's intended for a complete CMP, but you can just focus in on the sections you need. I found it incredibly helpful when I wrote my organization's first ever CMP.
    Good luck!

Hi, Miriam - I would start by reviewing the museum's mission.  Has this changed since collecting began?  Is there a statement of collecting goals?  Does this outline "gaps" that the museum would like to fill?  Since you are in an interim position, I'd be careful of making changes that could have long term effect.  If the present goal or challenge is space-related, perhaps it's time to investigate off-site storage or planning and fund raising to expand capacity.  Reasons for deaccessioning should be very clear and strong.  Vivian
