Hi all! I am wondering if you all have resources for best practices when revising a collection management policy.

Thank you in advance for your help!

    Nia,

The best book on the subject is Things Great and Small: Collections
Management Policies, Second Edition by John E. Simmons. The third
edition of the book is scheduled to be released in April. John did a
webinar for Museum Study on Introduction to Collection Management
Policies last May which can be seen on our YouTube Channel
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDd6iTTA0Tc&t=14s

John will also be leading his 4 week online course Policies for Managing
    Collections in July 2024

AASLH offers a two-part course that helps you create or overhaul your CMP. CM100 covers Collection Development (scope of collection, accession, deaccession etc.) CM200 covers Stewardship and Public Access.  https://aaslh.org/professional-development/online-courses/

A standard resource regarding what should be included in a Collections Management Policy is A Legal Primer On Managing Museum Collections by Malaro and DeAngelis.

    Hi Nia,

We were lucky enough to have Matthew Clouse, Registrar at the University of California Riverside, California Museum of Photography/Culver Center for the Arts, contribute an article about CMPs on our Artwork Archive blog. Hopefully it can be of help: https://www.artworkarchive.com/blog/3-things-you-don-t-need-in-your-collection-management-policy

    Cheers,
    Elysian
