Hi all! I am editing a volume on museum workplace culture for AAM/Bloomsbury Press - the first book on the topic. Inspiration for this project comes from the magnitude of toxicity, inequity, and lack of advancement for opportunities for museum workers; I aim to highlight cases of breaking convention and innovating new structures and approaches for a healthier museum workplace moving forward.

A goal of this project is to welcome new voices to the conversation that represent a diversity of experiences. I'm attaching the call for proposals here - please consider submitting a proposal and/or sharing with your own networks!

    Dear Rebekah

Thank you for sharing this great initiative. I would love to be part of it by sharing a unique story I lived with children visiting a museum and chatting with the staff. I am sending my abstract and proposal to: museumculturebook@gmail.com

It will be awesome to have a Zoom chat soon. I am working with children in museums. Here is a recent example of my approach:

    Hello!

I am so glad that this project is happening! I am a Museology student so I am getting to know how things work in this field but I have 10 years of education experience and this topic has been on my mind. For my thesis, I am planning to create a tool that can help museums evaluate the presence or absence of elements that contribute to psychological safety in that space. I look forward to reading this book!

    Thank you!

    Dear Rebekah:

I have been blogging & otherwise publishing (e.g. about the poor working conditions in museums since 2012.  See my Solving Task Saturation for Museum Workers blog at https://solvetasksaturation.wordpress.com/. Essentially, I argue that the museum industry is characterised by a tremendous amount of unresourced expectations that result in highly motivated museum workers to overwork to the point of burnout. See "MAS Community Chat: Paul Thistle – Museum Worker Burnout: More than 'Self-Care' for Survival." Museums Association of Saskatchewan Community Chat presented on 2 February 2022 at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--RbABKPnRk . I would be interested in submitting a summary of the problem & the solutions I have identified.
