Hi, John, talk directly with your board chair about the need to reorient the board's focus. Talk with him/her about things that need attention from the board--strategic planning, fundraising, partnerships, etc. You can introduce administrative stuff through policy discussions--a human resources manual review for example, or volunteer management. Use your agenda setting responsibilities to introduce topics and to control when the discussions go off track--"I'm sorry we don't time to talk the copier contract, we need to move on to the next item on the agenda."
In my experience, this is a multi-year project so think long-term. Some of the change you want requires re-norming the group which technically isn't complete until you've had a complete turnover in membership. I have always found strategic planning to be a good board development tool for many reasons but that's another topic. If you have a little money, use an outside consultant for board training. Good luck!

Hello friends.
Yahoo from the Museum of East Texas! Short story, the previous director was not professional and the board is now trying to compensate.l. The board are a wonderful group of people, but they are trying to be a professional board with no board training. They want to manage things like day-to-day operations, time sheets, leave forms, etc. I believe that is nonsense, Please give examples and advice! John
