    Hello friends.

Yahoo from the Museum of East Texas! Short story, the previous director was not professional and the board is now trying to compensate.l. The board are a wonderful group of people, but they are trying to be a professional board with no board training. They want to manage things like day-to-day operations, time sheets, leave forms, etc. I believe that is nonsense, Please give examples and advice! Your board should not really be managing day to day operations.

AAM has some resources for board responsibilities that might be helpful.

Also, check AASLH's STePS program – it's been a while since I looked but there may be information there as well.

Hi, John - wow!  These are all great questions, but the challenge is  (apparently) deep and wide.  You do not say what your place in the organization is and whether there is paid staff and, especially, a CEO who has received an official delegation of authority from the board.  There are wonderful resources through AAM that I would urge you to access.  These would answer all of your questions and those I'll guess you haven't thought of.

AAM has a terrific Museum Assessment Program (MAP) that I believe is perfect for your institution!

    here's a link to AAM's information it:

    good luck!

You might want to share objective information from the field, presuming you can also get some good advice about how to capture the Board's attention.

I was part of the AAM Collections Sustainability task group and I suggest using the rubric (page 3) and the resource list. https://www.aam-us.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Collections-Sustainability-Rubric-Ready-for-web-6-20.2-1.pdf  It would provide a quick glimpse at things that should be happening at your institution along with the intersections of functional areas.

The AASLH StEPs program is also valuable since you are working in a history museum. https://aaslh.org/professional-development/steps/

Hi, John, talk directly with your board chair about the need to reorient the board's focus. Talk with him/her about things that need attention from the board--strategic planning, fundraising, partnerships, etc. You can introduce administrative stuff through policy discussions--a human resources manual review for example, or volunteer management. Use your agenda setting responsibilities to introduce topics and to control when the discussions go off track--"I'm sorry we don't time to talk the copier contract, we need to move on to the next item on the agenda."

In my experience, this is a multi-year project so think long-term. Some of the change you want requires re-norming the group which technically isn't complete until you've had a complete turnover in membership. I have always found strategic planning to be a good board development tool for many reasons but that's another topic. If you have a little money, use an outside consultant for board training. Good luck!
