  • 1.  Augmented Reality museum apps

    We are starting the conceptual phase for an AR app for our museum visitors. Any examples of museums who have completed such a project I should check out in my research? Looking for what to do and what not to do, basically the good, the bad, and the ugly! Thanks!

    I don't have any recommendations near you, but take a look at Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum's "Stronger Together." https://memorialmuseum.com/mobile-app/

    I've been in conversations with Novaby recently and they are doing some innovative AR work. You can see some samples here.  https://www.novaby.com/ar-xr

    My advice is to consider AR in the context of other options. Is AR a better way of achieving your goal than a more traditional tour, video, touchscreen, etc... AR is a lot of fun, but it's tough to make AR significantly more effective at delivering information than traditional methods: graphics, text, video. And it's still a bit difficult to integrate AR with other media, but AR is rapidly getting cheaper to develop and easier to deploy so this is mostly a matter of time and creativity. I'm happy to discuss your specific ideas further if you like.

    Thanks for the kind words Tod. We agree with his recommendation: it's important to think about AR within the broader context and user experience.  

    We have worked with a number of museums and communities to create AR experiences, exhibits and tours.  The good news is that there has been a rapid increase in the number of AR platform options on the market over the last year making AR easier, faster and more affordable to create. Here is a link to our recently updated inventory of AR platforms that are suited to the arts, culture, and heritage sector.  Capabilities, price and ease of use varies across the platforms.  So the right choice for a given organization or project depends a lot on your budget and in-house capabilities and bandwidth for potentially creating and managing your own AR content.

    AR is a great way to add more context to physical museum exhibits.
